A female suicide bomber, on Friday, blew herself up in a big market in Maiduguri, capital of Nigeria’s northeast, a vigilante and a witness said.
“There had been a suicide attack on Gamboru market this morning. It was a female suicide bomber. The attack happened around 6:30 am as the grocers were arriving in the market which starts early,” said the vigilante, Babakura Kolo.
The resounding blast, which roared at about 6:30am, shook all over Maiduguri. According to witnesses, the explosion occurred near the entrance of Gamboru Market where operatives of commercial tricycles park to pick passengers.
A civil servant, Maryam Abu, who resides close to the area said: “We heard the blast at about 6:30am this morning and shortly afterwards, we saw people running from the direction of the market screaming that it was a bomb.”
Number of casualties are yet to be specified at press time as security operatives believe it has the imprint of the extremist Boko Haram sect.
The Gamboru market is the second largest in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.
